SWORD and targe
The Targe or Target is a generally round shield that is strapped to the forearm. It is usually 45-60cm in diameter and used in conjunction with the broadsword or backsword.
The target was a common sight on the battlefields of Europe. And, indeed, George Silver (1599) states that it is a weapon combination better suited to the battlefield than the duel.
We teach the targe from British sources; Thomas Page's The use of the broad sword. In which is shown, the true method of fighting with that weapon, as it is now in use among the highlanders (1746) and Donald McBane's The Expert Sword-Man's Companion (1728).
