HOBART

Set up by Stephen Hand in 2004, the Hobart club teaches a range of historical fencing styles. Everyone trains initially in the core weapon, English basket hilted sword according to the system of late 16th/early 17th century author George Silver. Students then branch out into different weapons depending on their strengths and inclinations.

Other systems taught include rapier (several systems, primarily Swetnam, Saviolo and Giganti), sword and shield according to Talhoffer and other sources, sword and buckler according to Silver and MS I.33 and English longsword according to Silver and various 15th-16th century manuscripts.

Second weapons are mainly taught on a Tuesday night class for intermediate and advanced students.

A notable feature of Stoccata in Hobart is a monthly tournament, with an overall champion declared every year. A typical night of training includes an hour long class on Silver’s sword followed by bouting and a range of melee based games.

Stephen has also become Hobart’s leading fight choreographer for stage and screen productions, working on many productions including Spamalot, Peter Pan and a film version of Macbeth. Classes are available for actors wishing to obtain theatrical swordfighting skills.
